Previous FBI Chief James Comey Files Denial Plea to Accusations of Misleading Congress
Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James the former director has denied the charges to making false statements to congressional representatives and impeding a legislative process.
His lawyer filed the response acting as his counsel in a federal court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday morning.
His attorney stated he would try to have the legal matter terminated for multiple reasons including that his client, a detractor of Donald Trump, was being singled out.
The former director was formally accused shortly after Donald Trump urged his top legal official to proceed against him.
Legal Proceedings
In court on Wednesday, the defense counsel Patrick Fitzgerald told the court they aimed to submit multiple petitions to throw out the legal matter before a legal hearing, claiming the legal action was vindictive and that a federal prosecutor was improperly appointed to handle the case.
James Comey's proceedings was first overseen by a Virginia prosecutor, who stepped down under scrutiny from Trump after his probe into another political adversary - the New York official - did not succeed to bring criminal charges.
Legal Setting
James Comey appeared in positive mood as he came into the legal venue on mid-week, chatting with his lawyers and being lighthearted. He was supported by his partner, his wife and daughter his daughter, a US lawyer who the Trump administration terminated.
After listening to the court state his constitutional guarantees and the pair of allegations against him in the courtroom on Wednesday, the defendant was inquired if he grasped the accusations.
"I do your honour. Thank you," he informed the court.
Previous Events
The former director was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013-2017 and was terminated about four months into Trump's first term as president. At the time, he was directing an probe into Russian election interference and whether there were any relationships between Moscow and Trump's campaign.
Throughout his leadership, Mr Comey sparked a backlash from the Democratic party when he declared just days before the national vote that he was probing presidential nominee Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Charges against Clinton were never brought, leading to criticism from conservative politicians as well.
Current Allegations
Prosecutors allege the former director gave untrue statements to the legislature during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in recent years when he was being examined about both the email probe as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They claim he misled the legislative body by stating he had not authorized a person at the agency to leak to media organizations data about the government examinations.
Government lawyers also allege the defendant of "wrongfully trying to sway, block and delay" the panel by providing untrue information to it.
Individual Responses
In a video the former director posted to his social media after he was accused, he said he was innocent and alleged Trump of conducting himself like a "dictator".
"Our household have been aware for a long time that there are consequences to standing up to Donald Trump," he commented. "We choose not to live on our bended knee."
"I have done nothing wrong," he added. "Therefore proceed with a legal proceeding."
The accusations against James Comey surfaced after Donald Trump shared on social media insisting on his chief prosecutor, Ms Bondi, charge the former director and other people.
